Crummock Water, is 4km long and almost 1 wide. Like Buttermere, you can swim—with a tow float—canoe etc with a permit, but no sailing, making these lakes some of the quietest and most laid back in the whole of Lakeland.
Grassmoor, Ranerdale Knotts, Red Pike, Mellbeck, and the highest waterfall in the Lake District, Scales Force, surround the lake. The shingle beach by the slate boat house is a popular spot for wild swimming, and low level walks around the area are as gorgeous and worthwhile as climbing the majestic summits.
The “secret valley” beside Rannerdale Knotts is famous for the bluebells when in season, the hike up to Scales Force is a fun one, and if you’re up for a long one, nine miles around the lake should be just the ticket. I love this one. Just that little bit off the beaten track and all the quieter because of it. If it’s peace and quiet you seek...this is the one for you.
