A lot of guests from Kestrel Lodge love walking the Wainwrights. Me and mum are also slowly ticking them off in what we’ve dubbed our Wednesday Walking Club.
When we first moved to Kestrel Lodge, I said we could walk 9 Wainwrights from the door; Great Cock Up, Binsey, Carl Side, Longside Edge, Ullock pike, Skiddaw, Bakestall, Great Calva, and Knott. Since doing a lot of walks, discovering quite a bit, and not worrying about every walk being a true circle…or on a map…I’ve added to that number. Significantly.
Some rely on a bus ride home, but with most of them, I can walk back home again so here’s the list of additional Wainwrights…from your tent flap;
- Skiddaw Little Man
- Lonscale Fell
- Mungrisedale Common
- Bannerdale Crags
- Bowscale Fell
- Souther Fell
- Great Sca fell
- Brae fell
- Longlands fell
- Meal fell
- Dodd Wood
Including the original 9 that makes 22!
You can add Carrock Fell and High Pike to the possibles list if you can arrange a pick up…or don’t mind the long walk back Via the Cumbrian Way to Skiddaw house and then past Dash Falls and back to Kestrel Lodge passing Peter House Farm. Which means that every one of the Northern fells can be walked from a stay at Kestrel lodge.
So…what are you waiting for? Get walking!
I’ll be adding more walks to the website in the winter, but in the meantime, just ask and we can direct you on our walks.
We’re thinking of adding a Wainwright Walker Taxi Service next year to and from site that would allow you to do longer walks taking in more fells in a day—please let us know your thoughts about this?
