Cockup Circular Walk

From the campsite a pleasant hills and dales walk a low level circular walk on good tracks at a distance of approx. 2.5 miles, or with Great Cockup approx 6 miles

Go through the gate at the top corner of the camping field across the field to meet the Cumbrian Way, cross the small beck, over the stile, and keep to the right hand fence of the field to the next gate. Drop down the field diagonally to the next gate which takes you to a small bridge which you cross, and head for the road.

Cross the road and follow the Cumbrian way up the steep ascent to the top of the hill, keep right. Continue through the next gate where you will have views of Binsey to your left Great Cockup ahead, and Dash Falls behind you. Follow this well defined path over the hill top and then down towards a farm.

Just before you reach the farm take a right through the gate and follow the path to the road – for a short walk - Continue on the road to Peter House Farm .Just beyond the farm go over the stile on your right across the field to the next signpost, either follow the Cumbrian way back to Kestrel Lodge or take the Bassenthwaite sign and go for a drink and a bite to eat at the Sun Inn before returning!

Or To Walk Great Cockup – Turn left at the road and follow the road passed the farm and towards Orthwaite Farm.

Summit of Great Cockup looking out to Bassenthwaite

Just after the farm before you get to Orthwaite Farm there is a bridleway on your right. It is signposted Burn Tod, follow this track. Approximately 100m after the second quarry turn off on a turf track this track will take you gently at first then steeper as you climb towards the summit of great cockup. The path veers left and continues up through the heather towards the walled butt. At this point there is a right turn passing over a line of broken butts before coming to a grassy ridge with the summit cairn beyond.

There are a number of routes down to make this into a circular walk all of which are relatively easy. My pick is to continue over the ridge before descending between Meal Fell and Great Cockup back down to the track you left after the quarry.
